Information: HIV & AIDS

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV weakens a person's immune system. A percon can be infected with HIV for many years without feeling sick or showing any symptoms. WHen a person's immune system becomes so weak that other infections begin to occur (opportunistic infections) the person is diagnosed with AIDS.

HIV is transmitted by three (3) ways:
  • SEX. You can get HIV by having unprotected sex with a person who has HIV.
  • NEEDLES. You can get HIV by sharing
Needles with a person who has HIV. You can also get HIV from sharing needles for piercing, tattoos, injecting steroids, vitamins, or other drugs.
  • BEING BORN WITH IT. Babies can be born with HIV if the mother has HIV. A baby can get HIV during birth or from its mother's milk during breast feeding.

HIV is NOT transmitted by:
  • CASUAL CONTACT. Touching, hugging, dry kissing, or hanging out with a person who has HIV does not put you at risk.
  • INSECT BITES. Insects do not carry HIV and cannot transmit HIV infection.
  • DONATING AND RECEIVING BLOOD OR BLOOD PRODUCTS.
